What do children need in order to feel safe, valued, nurtured and able to thrive?
Many clients can recognise that their physical, practical and educational needs were met in childhood, while being less aware of the emotional and relational needs that are also important – such as being celebrated, listened to, comforted, encouraged and valued.
Using a mixture of original artwork by Pauline Andrew and photographic images, the Core Needs in Families Cards provide counsellors and therapists with a creative way to explore which needs were met, which may have been missing, and how these experiences might affect clients today.
The cards can be particularly helpful when acknowledging unmet needs feels difficult or disloyal. Clients can appreciate what their parents provided while also recognising what may have been missing, and that both experiences can be true.
Each pack contains:
“I have found these cards both easy to use and effective in exploring past, present and future with clients.”
“The cards do a great job of helping clients to think about – and grieve – what they may have missed out on. They also open up the way to exploring how needs may be met in the present day.”
