Deep Release E-Newsletter February 2012
Dear Friends
I was travelling to the Surrey Regional Group in January and listening to the lovely Fr Brian D'Arcy's Pause for Thought. I was very struck by the way he finished his talk, quoting James Baldwin:
Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.
I am constantly moved and humbled by the courage shown by clients who face into their pain. I do see clear changes that result, although they can inevitably sometimes be slow because of the degree of trauma that has been suffered and the messages that came with the hurt and stuck. I've also been very impacted by the courage shown by students on my Diploma course in the notorious Personal Development Group recently, when one after another they have risked asking for feedback on how others see them, and what their blind spots might be. It has been very moving and I pay tribute to their determination to change.
Perhaps we assume that anyone who asks for counselling must want to change, but sometimes I think it comes as a shock when we realise how difficult and painful this can be. Our hurts and hang-ups are familiar places and well defended. To actually be someone different, however liberating this might be, is also very scary. Am I that brave? What's certain is that we all need others to en-courage us!
Well, we hope that our courses this year will play a small part in strengthening and supporting both counsellors and clients on this journey to wholeness. I want to highlight some key courses coming up soon, which we hope will play a part in building each other up.
Thursday 15th March, Is it My Head or Is it My Hormones? is a brand new course on a fascinating topic. From teenage to the menopause, hormones play a major role in the lives and well-being of women. How can we tell what is causing the depression or dysfunction experienced by clients in our counselling rooms? Is it psychological or physical, or both? And what about pregnant clients, or those with Post Natal Depression? Would you recognise the signs? How can we, as counsellors, help? This is a one-off opportunity to learn from psychiatrist Dr Maureen Wilkinson, and the day is suitable for pastoral workers and some clients as well! Please spread the word and make sure you book your place. This is a rare day when lunch is provided, as it's at Ashwell's Country Club!
COURSES AT THE SION COMMUNITY, BRENTWOOD (Bring your own lunch)
Wednesday 28th March, Practical Skills in Group Supervision. We are delighted to continue our series of training days for Supervisors and Managers, and look forward to seeing you on this hands-on experiential day which will give you the tools to be a Group Supervisor - one of the most rewarding contexts for supervision that we know! Trainer Pauline Andrew will give demonstrations and then enable you to practice with one another to build skills and confidence.
Wednesday 18th April, Working with Dreams Part 1, with Rev Dr Russ Parker. If you couldn't make this day last year, you missed a treat! So don't lose out again this time and make sure you book your place soon! Russ gives a fascinating overview of the history of dream work, including the many references to dreams in the Scriptures. He outlines a number of different ways in which our dream stories can speak to us, and shows how the messages they bring us can be hugely important. A live demonstration and a chance to 'have a go' make this an unforgettable day.
Thursday 19th April, Working with Dreams Part 2 takes the training further with a practical skills workshop on different ways of working with dreams in counselling. To attend this second day, you must have attended Part 1, either last year or this year. Russ is a very entertaining speaker with a wealth of experience and inspirational stories, so make sure of your place!
COURSES AROUND THE UK
We are delighted to promote Deep Release courses taking place around the country and there are some goodies coming up soon!
You will find help on how to book via the above website links, so make the most of these opportunities to get first class training near you!
As always the Bursary Fund can help with the cost, and you can also pay by instalments to cover the cost. Please never let finances stand in the way of attending our training days. Many people are faithfully giving their gifts to help you train, and the Fund is currently healthy at the start of this new year. Please don't miss out! People are giving for you!
Here's another James Baldwin quote to finish with:
I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.
Another reason why we need courage to let go and move on. Take heart if the road is feeling tough right now. Come and join us and be filled with fresh hope and strength for the weeks ahead. We would love to see you.
Our love to you
Chris and Pauline
